How do I connect new Kidde heat detector alarm which is 120 V wired device with 9V battery backup. Out of 5 different colored wires only black and red were connected to current heat detector alarm and has no power. Second it has strange wiring and it seems like the cable is identical to those cable being used in sprinkler system or thermostat with multiple color wires. I removed currently installed Edwards heat detector and I found out that it had no power. I want to replace existing Edwards GS heat detector alarm and brought Kidde heat detector. I have this Edwards GS 135 wired heat detector alarm in my kitchen. It's my experience that it's rarely the electronics that fail from age, just dust accumulation in the sensing chamber. If any other tech knows of a reason these "new old" 449CT detectors sitting triple-sealed for years aren't likely to be reliable, I'm all ears.
The upside of using the 449CT is that it covers the 445CST "footprint" on the ceiling, which tended to be larger than other brands. In other words, they're very likely good, if you don't actually need the sounder in the smoke detector itself. The smoke sensors have had sealed caps on the smoke heads, closed in boxes, which were stored in a larger box: So no dust accumulation in the sensor chambers, which is what "ages" smoke sensors. I'm asking because I have some "new old stock" 449CT sensors that have been sitting stored in boxes for over over 11 years (since I retired). In my decades of working with these systems, I rarely if ever saw a system smoke detector (as opposed to a stand-alone or 120V smoke alarm) that used an internal sounder.
